Cavaghan and Gray hits learning milestone

18 July 2005
The Learning Zone
The Learning Zone

Exactly six months after opening, the Learning Zone, the new Learning Centre at Cavaghan and Gary in Carlisle, has successfully enrolled its 100th learndirect learner. Learners are studying everything from bite-sized courses right the way through to recognised qualifications.

Martyn Warwick, Usdaw Lifelong Learning Project Worker says, “Staff are given paid time off to go to the centre and register for courses - which has obviously help to hit this target”.

Nearly 70 staff are currently enrolled on a programme of learning that will either lead to a CLAIT or ECDL qualification. There have also been enrolments on ‘Skills for Life’ packages, digital camera courses and leadership courses.

The Centre is open three days a week and is staffed by either one of the union learning representatives or Patricia Preston, the Learning Zone Coordinator, who is also a qualified IT tutor. This means that Patricia is able to offer on the spot IT support, which has been of real help to the learners. Due to the great job she is doing at the centre, Patricia was recently the runner up in the “Excellence in Cumbria Awards for Learning, Skills and Achievement”.

It has been a difficult time for Cavaghan and Gray, over recent months with the loss of more than 600 jobs. The centre has been a positive focus for those facing redundancy, enabling them to gain new skills and qualifications, to help them move on and look for employment elsewhere. It is also proving to be a valued resource for those staying with the company.

Patricia says: “ Our centre is a fantastic resource for both the company and individual employees. We wanted to make learning as enjoyable as possible – so that’s why we strive to make our centre a friendly and relaxing place”. With such a positive attitude towards learning at the site, Patricia and her colleagues should be well placed to win the award next year!
