Learning Committees deserve legal recognition08 March 2005Campaigning for workplace Learning Committees to have the same legal status as Health and Safety Committees. Many employers have already agreed to set up joint Learning Committees with Union Learning Reps to agree and plan learning initiatives. However, not all employers agree to establish Learning Committees. And sometimes Learning Committees don't get the status they deserve. This is why Usdaw put a proposal to the TUC Congress 2004 that "calls on the Government to set up statutory workplace Learning Committees to ensure that employers work with ULRs in every workplace to deliver the training and learning that is relevant both to the needs of the business and the aspirations of the staff". This was passed by the Congress and is now TUC policy. Usdaw has now produced a short briefing note on "A Statutory Right to Workplace Learning Committees" which is available from the helpful resources section of the Usdaw web site. To help the campaign for legal status for workplace Learning Committees, please write to your local Labour MP - or use other similar channels to promote the issue.
