Soap Stars - 100% success
16 Usdaw members at the Standard Soap Company in Ashby-de-la-Zouch have been celebrating their passes in the literacy and numeracy National Tests. That’s a 100% success rate. The learners had been studying for two hours a week over the last few months as part of the site’s Lifelong Learning initiative. It was developed as a partnership between the company, Usdaw, Stephenson College and the local Learning and Skills Council.

Sowing the seeds of learning
Kent is often called the ‘garden of England’ but so far it’s been a desert for Lifelong Learning. Now it’s getting a makeover. No it’s not Ground Force, it’s TUFSE and in place of Tommy and Charlie we have Jim and Nikky. And like any makeover they are under pressure to get the job done on time. TUFSE (or the Trade Union Fund for the South East) was set up by the TUC and the six LSCs in the South East to fund union-led learning.

What is happening in retail?
Lifelong Learning is one of Usdaw’s most successful and popular campaigns. We have now trained over 500 Union Learning Reps and encouraged 10,000 members back into learning. But many in retail have yet to see these benefits and are asking why learning has been slow to develop in retail. And they want to know what Usdaw is doing about it.
