Permanent Evolution08 December 2009
Anyone who has been in Usdaw for the last few years can’t have failed to notice the change in how the union goes about its business. Over the last three years in particular we have tried to put extra emphasis on: more teamwork between reps and officials; more training and support for reps; a more professional approach to how we recruit and retain members. Our two Academies are taking our most experienced reps on to a new level and giving them the expertise to not only recruit and represent members but also to organise reps so they can then become self-sufficient in their workplaces. We have also improved and invested in our communication strategy with further investment planned for our website in 2010. Looking at the membership figures all of this has begun to pay off, but this is an ongoing process and as a union we will continue to modernise and adapt to give our members the first-class service they deserve.
ProtectionA big thank you to all of our activists for their hard work during the last 12 months. I think we can all look back on 2009 with pride. We are still the fastest growing union in the UK.But it was also one of the most difficult on record in terms of the recession and thousands of our members lost their jobs. Redundancy is a very painful experience for individuals and their families and Usdaw officials have worked tirelessly to ensure all workers get their rights during these difficult times. We will continue to lobby the Government for more protection for redundant workers and make sure administrators are forced to treat the workforce and their union with the respect both deserve.
ChallengesThe recession is far from over. Unemployment is still very high and I am very concerned about the level of youth unemployment although I am encouraged by the Government's ongoing efforts to turn this around. There will be a general election next year and I urge all of our members to think very carefully about how they vote. Usdaw's growth and successes cannot be totally divorced from 12 years of Labour Government. However, unlike many companies, Usdaw is very much still in business, in sound financial health, and ready to meet the challenges 2010 will undoubtedly throw at us. On behalf of the executive council can I wish you and your family a happy Christmas and a prosperous New Year.
