At this time last year we had 339,000 members, now we have more than 359,000, a net increase of more than 20,000.
This is a fantastic achievement because Usdaw loses around 80,000 members a year because they move jobs or leave the industries where we operate. When you see our growth in those terms you can appreciate the massive strides we are making.
Our recruitment and organising work goes hand in hand with our campaigning efforts. High on that list this year will be our campaign to protect agency and migrant workers to ensure they are not exploited and that permanent staff do not lose out in terms of their pay and conditions.
Other issues we will be pursuing this year will include rights for working parents and carers; our Freedom From Fear campaign, which promotes respect for staff, and our Check Out Learning campaign, which encourages staff to take up courses to help them as individuals and as employees.
