Positive progress

20 June 2008

Standing still isn’t an option for any trade union or any business these days, and that’s why Usdaw will continue to innovate and find new ways to make us more responsive to our members’ needs.

The latest exciting initiative is our new FirstCall Usdaw phoneline part of our Legal Plus service and free to all members from the minute they join. FirstCall is a quick, efficient way to register any personal injury case regardless of where the accident happened. It really does live up to its promise of No Fuss No Forms No Delay.

Don’t forget to remove your FirstCall Usdaw card from the front of your Arena magazine and keep it with you as you would your debit/credit card – you never know when you’ll need it. You’ll find more information on this major development on pages 12 and 13 of Arena.

You will also find a report of the union’s biggest conference, the Annual Delegate Meeting, which is the most important event in the Usdaw’s calendar. This four-day meeting allows union reps to discuss and vote on the most important issues for their members. It’s a fascinating, informative and enjoyable occasion.

On the political front we were quick to tell the Government of our concerns about the decision to abolish the 10p tax rate. I am pleased the chancellor has now increased personal tax allowances to compensate for this. Workers will see the difference in their September pay packets.

Finally I want to draw your attention to the availability of the Government’s working tax credits for workers with or without children. These cash credits provide important help to single people and couples. However the Government’s own figures show it is workers with no children who are most likely not to claim. Check out our guide on pages four and five of Arena magazine and if you are in any doubt ring the helpline number.

John Hannett
Usdaw General Secretary
