Safety Net Journal Issue 13

Support the campaign for directors duties on health and safety.

The TUC is calling for the Government to introduce a clear legal duty on directors to manage health and safety before the next election.

In the past there have been several attempts to persuade directors to comply with voluntary guidance. The latest was issued in 2007 by the HSC and Institute of Directors. But research shows that many company directors have failed to respond to this series of pleas to voluntarily take health and safety seriously.

A new campaign from safety magazines Health and Safety at Work and Health and Safety Bulletin (HSB) has been launched. Their aim is to get an enforceable duty on company directors. They are using an on-line petition (see below) to get support for their campaign.

The TUC and individual unions, as well as campaign groups such as the Centre for Corporate Accountability (CCA) and Families Against Corporate Killers (FACK) are also backing the campaign.

HSW-HSB petition reads;

'We call on the HSE board to recommend the government introduces a statutory duty on directors to take all reasonable steps to ensure the health and safety of their organisations' workers'.

You can sign the petition at;
