Safety Net Journal Issue 8

Early notice - Men's Health Week 9 to 15 June

The theme for this year's Men's Health Week is men's health at work. The HSE is supporting the Week and is keen for employers and union reps to get invovled.

The Week is organised by the Men's Health Forum. It's mission is to provide an independent and authoritative voice for male health and to tackle the issues affecting the health and well-being of boys and men in England and Wales.Too many men suffer unnecessarily poor health and die too young from preventable causes. Men's Health Week 2008 will cover three broad areas:

  • 'Traditional' health and safety issues (e.g. work-related accidents and ill-health, both physical and mental). A significant proportion of men's health problems are work-related.
  • The workplace's potential as a setting for improving the health of men. There is good evidence that, even though men are reluctant to access mainstream health services, especially primary care, they will use services provided at work.
  • The Government's health, work and well-being strategy.
