Safety Net Journal Issue 8

Conveyor belt injury

A blocked conveyor belt at TK Maxx’s distribution centre led to an employee being unconscious for almost a month and still suffering ill effects and unable to drive 2 years later. The company was fined £60,000 for breaches of health and safety law.

Cardboard boxes blocked on the belt were being cleared 10-12 feet up from a ladder when he fell fracturing his skull.

Following similar blockages the company had received advice from the local council on a safer way to clear the conveyor. The advice had not been followed and this was reflected in the size of the fine.

Members should not climb up conveyor belts to clear blockages. The employer should ensure safe systems of work, risk assessments and adequate training are in place before attempting to unblock belts.
