TUC National Inspection Day - 25th October 2006
By Tony Larkin
The Wednesday of European Health and Safety Week has been designated "National Inspection Day" by the TUC, when all safety representatives are asked to inspect their workplace.
This year the theme for European Health and Safety Week is musculoskeletal disorders (MSDs). The TUC is urging reps to get out into their workplaces on the Wednesday of European Week to carry out workplace inspections. MSDs are a significant risk for many Usdaw members, so the theme offers a good topic for safety reps to inspect on. When doing an inspection make sure that you talk to the workers (both members and non-members) to find out what their concerns are.
The HSE will be publishing two inspection checklists for trade union safety reps to use on their website - www.hse.gov.uk/index.htm.
A general TUC guide to workplace inspections is available at www.tuc.org.uk/extras/insbooklet30auglowres.pdf.
The HSE also provides inspection report forms at www.hse.gov.uk/workers/safetyreps/index.htm so you can give managers a written report of the result of the inspection.
