European Health and Safety Week 22 - 24 October
By Tony Larkin
European Health and Safety Week is on 22nd - 24th October. The main theme this year will be musculoskeletal disorders. The title given to this years theme is 'Lighten the Load'.
The Week is organised by the European Agency for Safety and Health and is promoted in the UK by the HSE. It aims to support employers, workers, safety representatives and other stakeholders in improving Musculoskeletal Disorders (MSD) prevention.
In Britain over 1 million people suffer from work related MSD's including back pain, work-related neck and upper limb disorders (ULDs)and lower limb disorders.
The HSE wants union reps and employers to work together to raise awareness of MSD risks during the Week. You could organise your own activities and events.
To find out more information on this from HSE, please go to www.hse.gov.uk/campaigns/euroweek/index.htm or from the European Agency for Safety and Health at Work, go to http://ew2007.osha.europa.eu/.
For Tesco safety reps, Tesco is running its health and safety campaign on manual handling in October to coincide with the European Week theme. Details of the campaign should be sent to store managers soon and they should be talking to the reps in their store to get them involved.
