Tesco shows its support for HSE Better Backs campaign
Tesco has demonstrated its its support for the HSE campaign by inviting fitness experts into stores to promote the launch of the campaign.
Tesco is signed up to the HSE campaign aimed at reducing the risk of back injury at work and cutting the number of days lost to back pain.
One of the key messages of the campaign is the benefit of staying active when you do have back pain. To promote the message Tesco invited fitness experts into 10 of its stores across the country on Monday 9 October to lead specially designed back-friendly exercise classes for both staff and customers. Figures show that 1 in 4 people suffer from back pain at some time in their lives. It results in 4.5 million lost working days every year. In addition to the pain and suffering of the victims it is a major cost to employers.
Speaking at the event in the Southwark store a Tesco manager explained 'We are pleased to join HSE's Better Backs campaign to tackle this common health problem. We always take an active interest in the health of our staff, but the sheer scale of the back pain problem in the UK means we felt it would be a good opportunity to send the message to our customers as well. From the point of view of an employer, there are many surprisingly simple ways you can help staff return to work with back pain, helping them manage their condition, and helping us maintain consistent levels of customer service and quality.'
Tesco's commitment to the campaign started even earlier in the year. In September the company ran a nationwide health and safety campaign working with Usdaw reps on lifting and carrying hazards to reduce the risk of work-related injury and to get the Better Backs message across to staff.
