Safety Net Journal Issue 4

Welfare at work guidance

By Tony Larkin

HSE has published online guidance for employers on welfare provisions in the workplace. It's also handy for Usdaw reps and members.

The guide answers questions on whether employers should provide toilet and washing facilities, drinking water, facilities at remote or temporary workplaces, arrangements for meals and meal breaks and so on. Providing facilities isn't enough. Employers must also ensure that the facilities are kept clean, in good condition, and there is always an adequate supply of toilet paper, soap etc.

The guidance can be found at: http://www.hse.gov.uk/pubns/indg293.htm If members have trouble downloading please contact the Health and Safety Section at Central Office for advice and assistance.
