Food Industry campaign to prevent back injuries
By Doug Russell
The Food Industry Forum involving trade unions, employers and the HSE is organising a major initiative on back pain as part of its contribution the HSE’s Better Backs campaign.
'Food Backs 2006!' will run from June to September. In June employers will be asked by their trade associations to fill in a survey form asking them about the number of reported cases of back injury and the steps they are taking to manage back problems in the workplace. These will be collated and analysed by the Forum and a report with examples of good practice will be presented at the annual Occupational Health and Safety in the Food Industry Conference on 25 October.
Usdaw wants safety reps in food and drink manufacturing plants to check with their employer to make sure that they know about the survey and are taking part. If there are any factories where the management don't know about the survey, reps should contact the Health and Safety Section in Central Office so we can send them more details.
The 'Food Backs 2006!' survey is being run to support the HSE's 'Better Backs' campaign. Following the success of their 'Backs 2005!' campaign, which Usdaw supported, HSE will be following it with a similar inspection campaign in October 2006 and a publicity campaign to raise awareness about preventing work-related back injuries and helping people with back injuries to stay in work. For more details keep an eye on the health and safety pages on the Usdaw website.
