HSC consults on new safety rep rights

By Tony Larkin

The HSC has launched a consultation document on ways of increasing worker involvement in health and safety. Usdaw wants reps to take part in the consultation and tell HSC what they think.

The involvement of people who actually do the job is recognised as vital by the HSC in reducing the number of accidents at work and improving health and safety in general. The consultation looks at a number of ways that this could be improved including some limited improvements to safety rep rights that the unions want to support.

The changes proposed would introduce a specific legal duty to consult with reps on risk assessments and to respond to representations from reps.

But the exercise also gives reps an chance to lobby for greater powers like the power to issue Provisional Improvement Notices that was the subject of a proposition at this year's Annual Delegate Meeting.

The closing date for responses is 8 September 2006. Reps can see the consultation documents and an on-line reply form at www.hse.gov.uk/consult/condocs/cd207.htm.

Please do let the HSE know your views and support the case for extended rights for safety reps.
