Safety Net Journal Issue 3

Working in hot environments

By Tony Larkin

Working in hot conditions can be extremely unpleasant and even dangerous. In expectation of the warmer weather, the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) has put together some guidance on the subject that may help members who suffer the heat.

The http://www.hse.gov.uk/temperature/index.htm section of the HSE's website provides advice on working during periods of hot weather and gives advice on:

  • Heat stress
  • Dehydration
  • UV exposures
  • Visual impairment due to glare
  • Sun Protection
  • Working in the sun
  • Temperatures in places where food is handled

The advice covers both indoor and outdoor working.

The heat stress section includes a useful Information Sheet, Heat stress in the workplace. What you need to know as an employer - http://www.hse.gov.uk/pubns/geis1.pdf
that will be of interest to members who work in bakeries, kitchens and other hot areas.
