Workplace Transport: An employers' guide

By Tony Larkin

In December 2005 HSE issued updated guidance on the safe use of vehicles in the workplace.

'Workplace Transport: An employers' guide', HSG136 costs £11.50 from HSE Books. The guide is an updated version of earlier guidance. It has been expanded to include more practical advice on site safety, the vehicles themselves and the people using them to make sure that the risks associated with workplace transport are reduced as much as possible.

Workplace transport is the second biggest killer in UK workplaces, causing 70 deaths in the last year. It also was responsible for nearly 2,000 major injuries. HSE has also produce a new free leaflet, Workplace Transport Safety: An overview. This 28 page guide covers advice on separation of vehicles and pedestrians, dealing with visiting drivers, making deliveries as well as safe site and safe vehicle advice and ways to manage risks associated with reversing, coupling and uncoupling, etc.

Copies of the free overview leaflet can be downloaded from HSE web site. If you want printed copies with the illustrations, contact the Health and Safety section in Central Office - healthandsafety@usdaw.org.uk , phone 0161 249 2441.The workplace transport web pages on the HSE web site carry other advice including some useful 'safe site' case studies.
