Safety Net Journal Issue 1

New advice on infection risks for funeral workers and embalmers

By Doug Russell

The HSE has produced a guide to infection risk for workers who handle human remains

It might seem a gruesome subject for some, but the risk of infection from handling human remains is a major concern for Usdaw members who work as funeral undertakers and embalmers. Now the HSE has published a free guidance booklet - "Controlling the Risks of infection at work from human remains" - that provides simple advice on the basic precautions that can protect workers. An appendix also lists some of the more dangerous infectious diseases and advises on the precautions that should be followed for them. The guide is only available as a web-based document on the HSE website - http://www.hse.gov.uk/pubns/web01.pdf. Any members who cannot access the Internet can get copies from the H&S section in the Legal Department at Central Office.
