Safety Net Journal Issue 1

Ladder safety guidance

By Tony Larkin

New guidance on ladder and step ladder safety has been issued by the Health and Safety Executive.

The guidance comes in the form of free leaflets outlining guidance for employers and one for a toolbox talk. They are available online. They explain how the use of ladders and stepladders is covered in the new Work at Height Regulations. The HSE is keen to dispel some urban myths that stepladders are banned and can no longer be used.

This of course is nonsense. But it is important that ladders are used safely and only for the correct purpose. It is a requirement to risk assess the use of equipment and prove the need to use it in the circumstances identified. Ladders should only be used for low risk, short duration tasks where no safer alternative is available. These guides will help reps to check that ladders are being used safely in their workplace.
