New HSE web pages on VDUs
28 March 2008
The Health and Safety Executive has launched new web pages with advice and guidance on display screen equipment (VDUs). The pages include an assessment checklist, case histories and other resources.
Computer workstations or other display screen equipment can be associated with neck, shoulder, back or arm pains, fatigue and eyestrain. Problems can affect members who have to use computer screens for long periods - e.g. call centre workers or security staff who monitor c.c.t.v. screens.
These aches and pains are sometimes called upper limb disorders (ULDs) or repetitive strain injuries (RSI). These problems can be avoided by following good practice. The HSE web pages offer more detailed advice on the good practice that should be followed.
They include a Display Screen Equipment checklist for safety reps. And they also include more detailed guidance on all aspects of health and safety in call centres.
