HSE slips campaign uses Usdaw mapping tool

04 March 2008

The hard-hitting campaign on slips, trips and falls - Shattered Lives - is urging safety reps to use the risk-mapping tool originally developed by Usdaw.

The campaign - http://www.hse.gov.uk/shatteredlives/index.htm - gives graphic examples of the serious injuries that can be caused by slips and trips in retail, food manufacturing and catering. It gives practical advice on ways of identifying the risks and on how to prevent slips and trips.

A set of useful resources is included in the 'Downloads' section of the site - http://www.hse.gov.uk/shatteredlives/resources.htm. These include a slip and trip risk mapping tool based on the one that Usdaw developed in 2004.

Slips and trips are a major problem for Usdaw members in all sectors. The HSE campaign provides a good opportunity for health and safety reps to inspect their workplace for slip and trip hazards. Using the risk mapping tool involves talking to workers to identify problems. It helps the rep to turn the information they collect into a report that management and members can understand. And it provides a way of charting progress in the elimination of the hazards.
