Better Backs 2007 - preventing back pain and RSI

27 October 2007

The HSE has revised its 2006 Better backs campaign pack to include material on Upper Limb Disorders (ULDs) and Display Screen Equipment (DSE). The new Better Backs packs contain eight Information Sheets and a CD with power point presentations and video clips.

At any one time more than a million people suffer from musculoskeletal disorders (MSDs) including back pain and upper limb disorders that are casued or made worse by their work. That’s enough people to fill the new Wembley Stadium 11 times over, according to the HSE.

The basic message of the HSE campaign is that we don't have to put up with it. There are things that can be done to prevent work-related MSDs or to minimise the damage they cause. The campaign pack contains advice on prevention by looking at repetitive work, manual handling and work with VDUs. But it recognises that not all MSDs can be prevented so there is also advice to help workers with MSDs to stay in work or return to work.

Many Usdaw safety reps found the 2006 Better Backs campaign pack very useful in raising awareness with members and with managers. The additional guidance in the 2007 packs should be even more helpful.
