Protecting the health and safety of young workers25 July 2007This is the time of year when the number of young people working increases due to the summer break. HSE guidance spells out what employers have to do to keep them safe. The HSE guidance is available on the on the Young People web pages on their website. They point out that young people, especially those new to the workplace, will encounter unfamiliar risks from the jobs they will be doing and from the working environment. Employers can help young people to understand the importance of health and safety at work. It will serve them well not only in their working life, but in their everyday life as well. . The law on young people applies to people between 18 years old and the Minimum School Leaving Age (MSLA). The MSLA is around 16 years old but varies depending on when you start school. More detailed rules apply for employment of children under the MSLA. For information on children at work look at Usdaw’s guide ‘Child Employment’.
