Local Authority enforcement events for councillors18 July 2007Instead of their usual partnership conference in health and safety enforcement in December, HSE and LACORS are organising a series of strategic planning events held regionally in October and November, aimed at Heads of Service and Councillors. Local authorities enforce health and safety law for the majority of Usdaw members working in shops, offices and warehouses. A lot has been happening recently with new consultation arrangements between HSE and local authorities as well as the recent Rogers Review of all local authority enforcement activities and the setting up of the Local Better Regulation Office. Nationally the resources devoted to enforcement of health and safety by local authorities fell during the 1990s and have not recovered since. The union is concerned that the 'Better Regulation' agenda should not result in a softer approach to health and safety enforcement. Members who are active as local councillors should watch out for events in their area. Dates for events are as follows:
Events will run from 10.30am to 3.00pm. Bookings will be taken from the beginning of August. Full details of how to register will be made available then.
