Compactor safety guidance

08 June 2007

The Health and safety Executive (HSE) has written a ‘best practice’ guide on balers and compactors. The guidance is intended for managers, supervisors and operators of premises where these machines are used.

Many Usdaws members in the retail sector come across these devices when packing waste cardboard up. The guidance focuses on public safety and the risk to operators.

The guide covers risk assessments and gives advice on control measures for:

  • site safety
  • safe systems of work
  • safe equipment
  • blockages
  • skip removal

The guidance is available from HSE at; http://www.hse.gov.uk/pubns/waste08.pdf
