Fire Safety in the Workplace25 January 2007A new guide for Usdaw reps has been added to the Hazards section of this website, it has been written to enable Usdaw reps and members to check that employers are complying with the new legislation. The Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005 simplifies the previous legislation and requires employers and premises owners to have a greater understanding of fire safety. A set of guides developed by the Department for Communities and Local Government inform employers what they have to do to comply with the new law. The guides help them to carry out a fire risk assessment and identify the general fire precautions they need to have in place. For most Usdaw members Guide 1: Shops and Offices or Guide 2 Factories and Warehouses will be the most relevant. Although for those who work in shops inside large shopping centres, Guide 7: Large Places of Assembly may also be important. The new Usdaw guide explains what employers should be doing to comply with the new fire safety legislation and gives some basic advice on fire risk assessment and on precautions. Employers should be consulting with health and safety reps on fire risk assessments and should keep them informed of any changes.
