Home Health and Safety
Is it doctors orders for Health and Safety?25 January 2007Lord McKenzie of Luton has been named as the latest in a long line of politicians to head up the health and safety brief at the Department of Work and Pensions. Since Labour returned to power in 1997 there have been eight ministers in charge of health and safety and we are now onto the ninth! Other post-holders have included; Angela Eagle, Alan Meale, Alan Whitehead, Lord Whitty, Nick Brown, Des Browne, Jane Kennedy and Lord Hunt. With an average time in post of 13 months (though some considerably less) it can be difficult keeping up with the changes. Let’s hope that Lord McKenzie, who by career was an accountant with overseas experience in Hong Kong and Vietnam, can stay the course and get to grips with the health and safety agenda. Any safety reps who want to help bring him up to date could drop him a letter or email with your views on the cuts in HSE resources and the review of local authority enforcement - and copy his boss, John Hutton, into the correspondence.
