Food Industry Recipe for Safety continues to improve
18 November 2006
The HSE's annual injury statistics show continued improvement in the food manufacturing industry.
Since the 'Recipe for Safety' strategy was launched with the joint support of food industry unions, employers' organisations and the HSE, the decline in accidents in the sector has been much greater that the manufacturing average. The 2005/06 health and safety statistics confirm that trend is continuing.
Since 1990/91, when the strategy was launched, overall injury rates for the industry have dropped by 37% (compared to an average of 20% over all manufacturing industries). The major injury rate has reduced by 23.5% since 1995, when changes to the injury reporting regulations were introduced.
Speaking about the figures, Richard Morgan from the HSE said 'The continued improvement is thanks to all those in the industry, both in official committees such as the Food Manufacture H&S Forum and to those at the 'front end', who have been targetting the 'Recipe for Safety' priority topics over the past 15 years.'
Doug Russell, Usdaw H&S Officer added 'The Recipe for Safety strategy has been a great example of the benefits of HSE, employers and trade unions working together to drive through improvements. The continued reduction in injuries is welcome. However there is no room for complacency. Accident rates are still above average in many sections of the industry. Common problems like slips and trips continue to cause the majority of serious injuries. We know from experience they can be prevented by better health and safety management.'
