HSE survey confirms stress is the number one isssue
18 May 2006
The HSE has published the first results of its workers survey. It shows that stress is most widespread hazard, with 20% of workers concerned that it could cause them harm.
Over 10,000 workers took part in the survey last year. The next most common causes for concern after stress were lifting and carrying, slipping or tripping and dust or fume exposure. For most of these, there was general agreement that the risk had been reduced over the last year. Stress was the one exception where there was a clear view that the risk had increased.
Stress along with musculoskeletal disorders (MSDs) amount to around 70% of lost working days in Britain . Stress can occur in any workplace and it is important that both employers and employees recognise the symptoms at an early stage.
HSE have produced guidance for employers and the stress management standards can help employers tackle the issue.
