Expert support for reps

18 August 2008

Usdaw offers both its new and experienced reps training and education which is second-to-none. Network caught up with some of the latest activists busy improving their skills.

Understanding Tesco’s Supporting Your Attendance (SYA) policy was top of the agenda at a recent training course in the North Eastern division.

Reps from the Stockton-on-Tees Extra store attended the two-day course specifically designed to help them get to grips with the SYA policy.

“The course was run jointly between management and Usdaw and helped clear up a lot of confusion,” said Usdaw rep Adem Ahmet. “It was held in store and was well received by all the reps including those who attended from other stores in the area.

Usdaw training officer Mark Bibby, area organiser Joanne Thomas and personnel manager Linda Carr were all on hand to help run the course.

“This worked very well indeed as we were able to see things from both sides – the management and the staff perspective,” added Adem.

“SYA has caused a lot of controversy between management and staff since it was introduced, but the course helped to break down some of the barriers that had built up.

“We covered every part of the policy and took part in role play sessions and had presentations on different scenarios.

“This was a very useful course and having Linda’s input helped us see how the policy will help both sides and it gave us a more balanced view.”
