Membership Maker07 August 2008Makro’s Martin Snape does it his way When it comes to recruiting, Makro rep Martin Snape is a natural having signed up more than 165 new members during two stints of stand-down. “I just love recruiting,” said Martin, 41, who has been a rep for 10 years and works at the Makro site in Stoke. “Stand-down gives you quality time to work on getting the maximum out of each site visit. I targeted Makro sites across the North West and I made some real breakthroughs. “People’s knowledge varies, from those who know about trade unions to others who are completely surprised that they are allowed to join. “Once you get chatting and show them the full range of benefits of joining they are genuinely interested. “Legal Plus is always good and always gets a startled reaction when you explain it’s free. “You can’t go into any workplace assuming people already know about the union because believe me it’s amazing to see just how patchy information is. “One of the difficulties we have at Makro is recruiting staff who only work one day over the weekend – they don’t want to part with their money. “But I have had some success in this area. In fact I recruited a lady who’d worked as a Sunday only worker for many years. She didn’t know she could join – she said nobody from the union had ever asked her before.” Contact Details Media and Communications Department Ph: 0161 224 2804 Fax: 0161 249 2490 communications@usdaw.org.uk |
