Home Get Active Successful Organising
Reps getting it together23 July 2008Divisional get-togethers are allowing reps from a number of stores to meet up, discuss common problems and share ideas. Network catches up with events in the North East. The North Eastern division is running a number of get-togethers and workshops throughout the year to train and encourage reps to get more involved in their workplaces. The two-day events usually include an overnight stay and are designed to give reps time out away from their workplaces to focus on specific areas of organising. More than 120 reps have attended Co-op, Morrisons, Sainsbury's and Tesco events already this year and are pictured below and right. This is what they had to say. “It was a great turnout and a brilliant couple of days,” said Hazel Brooks from the Morrisons Scunthorpe store. “Networking with reps from all over the division and finding out what goes on in their stores is very useful.” Robert Wight, who works at the Co-op store in Baildon near Bradford, said: “Every workplace needs a union rep. We didn’t have a rep when I joined. So I took on the job and I love it. “The training from Usdaw has been first-class. This get-together was invaluable. I’ve learned a lot.” Stephen Lord, who works at the Sainsbury’s White Rose store in Leeds, agreed. “There was a real feel-good factor at the event. “I returned to work raring to go and I’ve just found out my organiser has put my name forward for a pre Academy course – I can’t wait.” Anne Webb from Tesco, Edenthorpe in Doncaster enjoyed it too. “You gain so much, not just knowledge but confidence too. It was such a relaxed atmosphere. Everyone was so down to earth. And I had the opportunity to chat to senior union officials about a variety of issues.” General secretary John Hannett added: “These events provide an ideal opportunity for new and experienced reps to learn from each other and to meet up with their area organisers and other union officials. The get-togethers are being used more often in the divisions and reps appreciate meeting fellow reps from other stores, sharing ideas and problem solving.” Contact Details Media and Communications Department Ph: 0161 224 2804 Fax: 0161 249 2490 communications@usdaw.org.uk |
