Academy intake 2008

23 July 2008

The union’s groundbreaking Academy has given expert training to reps over the last five years and it has now expanded even further to offer more with Academy2.

Usdaw’s Organising Academy opened its doors in May to 26 new recruits keen to make their mark in hundreds of workplaces across the UK over the next six months.

Now in its sixth year the Academy will have trained 110 new organising officers by November 2008.

“The Academy has been a real success,” said deputy general secretary Paddy Lillis. “It allows us to have some of our best reps and activists seconded to us for six months.

“They help raise the union’s profile in a variety of workplaces often where we have little or no union presence. They have recruited thousands of new members. After six months organisers return to their own workplaces with new skills, more experience and a newfound confidence to organise their own workplaces better.”

Angie Dewing was ‘gobsmacked’ when she found out she’d been selected. “I couldn’t believe it,” said Angie, 46, from Norfolk. “I’ve only been a rep for a year but it’s been a fantastic 12 months. I’ve had lots of support from the union and I’ve learned so much.

“My area organiser Stuart Sharman gave me the push to apply for the Academy. I’m so pleased he believed in me because I’m raring to go.”

Academy1 2008: Rhian Jones, Jacqueline Barrett (Morrisons), Anthony Strudwick (Nampak Plastics), Malcolm Calaby (NFT Distribution), Allan Nawanga (Sainsbury), Jamie Gull, Daniel Tobin (Co op Retail Logistics), Neil Chapman (Midlands Co op), Patrick Muir (Home Delivery Network), Kevin Harrison, Carmen Atkins, Milan Pavlik, Angie Dewing, Maria Luff, Lisa Grainge, Aron Vernon, Edyta Maroszek, Mark Conteh, Gwen Jones, Danielle McCusker, Paul Taylor, Peter Wolfe, Laura Battle, Paul White, (Tesco), John Todd (Tesco Distribution), Brenda Bell (Tesco/Boots).
