Keeping it in the family

09 June 2008

The Bell trio are branching out

The union is a real family affair in the Bell household where all three members are active reps.

Mum Brenda, dad Rob and daughter Sam from Greater Manchester could form their own mini-branch. Twenty-two year-old Sam is the latest addition to the fold.

“My parents encouraged me from a very early age to stand up for what I believe in and to speak up when I thought something wasn’t fair,” she said. “And basically that’s what the union’s all about – making sure people are treated fairly at work.”

Sam and Rob work at the Tesco store in Bury while Brenda holds down two jobs, full-time at Tesco Rochdale and part-time at Boots Heywood and she’s a rep at both. “It’s in our genes,” said Rob. “Our Sam, she’s a natural. She wasted no time taking on the role of rep to look after the night shift. She’s got a great rapport with the younger staff too.”

There’s always something on the agenda in the Bell household. “There’s never a dull moment,” said hard-working Brenda. “We’ve usually lots to talk about, whether it be an issue at work or the next union course we’ve signed up for. And after 23 years of marriage we don’t often fall out, we just love a good debate.

“We feed off each other, always comparing notes and running things by one another.”

Husband Rob agreed. “Brenda’s the driving force behind everything,” he said. “She’s always there with a gentle push, encouraging me and Sam.

“I’ve just completed a Return to Learn course. At first I was dragging my heels, not too sure, but Brenda said ‘go on, give it a go’ – and I’m so pleased I did. It was brilliant, I feel really proud of myself.”

“We’ve always been a close family,” added Sam. “But being involved with the union has helped bring us closer than ever.”
