Stand-down success16 May 2008Active reps are using the stand down facilities at Sainsbury’s to recruit hundreds of new members. Network caught up with Trish Radford. Dedicated Sainsbury’s rep Trish Radford’s flair for recruitment paid real dividends when she signed up 189 new members and 20 new reps during her time out as a stand-down rep. “I spent 18 weeks and I loved every minute of it,” said Trish, 62, who works at the Sainsbury’s store in Chaddesden, Derbyshire. “I really believe in the union and I try to ensure my enthusiasm comes across when I’m out recruiting. I think that’s the real secret of my success. “Usdaw has negotiated a really good stand-down agreement with Sainsbury’s and I’d like to see more reps using it and asking their area organisers to negotiate some time out for them. “We could make massive inroads in Sainsbury’s if we had more reps out on stand-down. “Not only will you help to put down some solid foundations in stores where there is low membership but it will also develop your skills and build your confidence.
