Network Spotlight – Tony Strudwick

13 May 2008

Network meets up with one of Usdaw’s 10,500 strong army of reps and finds out what life is like at the sharp end. South Wales and Western division’s Tony Strudwick answers our questions

Why did you become an activist?

I believe we are all equal and have a common cause.

What do you enjoy most as a rep?

Doing the best for those who need help.

Is there a down side to being a rep?

No I enjoy most days.

Have you been on any training courses?

Yes and I really enjoyed them. I went on the branch officer’s course recently which was very good.

Have you been to the Annual Delegate Meeting?

Yes I went last year and it was very interesting and informative and gives you the chance to speak to a much wider audience.

What are the most important issues for your members at present?

Pay.

Is recruitment easy in your workplace?

Yes as everyone seems to appreciate the need for the union. We have around 45 per cent migrant workers at present and while the majority tend not to get active I think that will change in time.

What’s surprised you about being in Usdaw?

How little thanks you get from some of the members when you do a good job.

What advice would you give to a member thinking about becoming a rep?

Make sure you go on the training courses and then sit back, look, listen then act before your next move.

Which news item has caught your attention recently?

Surplus money in the NHS.

What would you do if you were prime minister for the day?

Reduce taxes and give more to those who need help.

Looking back on your life is there anything you would change?

The way we dealt with things in the ‘70s and ‘80s.

What’s next for Tony Strudwick?

I’ve been accepted for this year’s Academy. I’ve also just found out my mother-in-law has progressive supranuclear palsy. There is no government funding for this terrible disease so myself, my wife and father-in-law, who’s 75, are aiming to raise money by running the Tewkesbury half marathon.
