pole to pole12 May 2008Usdaw is determined to bring agency and migrant workers into membership and encourage them to become reps. Network takes a look at the first course held for Polish workers A two-day introductory training course specially designed for Polish reps – the first of its kind – helped break down the language barrier for activists from the North Eastern division. Twelve reps from Cavaghan and Gray and Tesco retail and distribution attended the groundbreaking course held at the Newcastle office in February. “The course was excellent,” said 26 year-old Emilia Majewska, who works nights at the Tesco store in Hexham. “I learned a lot about rights at work and how to represent members at grievances and disciplinary hearings. “We had a Polish tutor from Sunderland College and a lot of help from a couple of the reps who had really good English skills, this helped us understand things better and much quicker.” Pawel Tarnecki, 29, who works at the Tesco distribution centre in Chesterfield agreed. “My English is very good so I was happy to help and translate,” he said. “The reps were very enthusiastic and wanted to learn more about employment rights and their role as a rep. They were also very interested in the lifelong learning opportunities within the division especially the English language courses. “I’ve applied for this year’s Organising Academy because I’d like to progress with the union and improve my skills and experience.” Head of education James Rees was delighted with this latest development. “The course was a positive experience for all concerned,” he said. “The contribution of the Polish tutor was invaluable.” Contact Details Media and Communications Department Ph: 0161 224 2804 Fax: 0161 249 2490 communications@usdaw.org.uk |
