Natural born recruiter

07 April 2008

Award winning Susan David

It has been a tremendous year for Morrison’s rep Susan David winner of the union’s prestigious national recruitment award for 2007.

The bubbly 49 year-old was presented with her award at the special ceremony held at a top Manchester hotel in January.

“I couldn’t believe it when I heard I’d won the divisional nomination and even more surprised on the night when my name was called out for the national award,” said Susan who works at the Morrison’s store in Swansea, South Wales.

“I’ve been a rep for four years. I love being involved, meeting and helping people. I spent a lot of time out last year visiting stores across Wales signing up new members and reps. It was a brilliant experience.

“I’m a people person really, friendly and approachable and I like talking and listening – all good qualities for a rep. “I try to make induction sessions fun and relaxed when I’m introducing new starters to the union. A bit of role-play and a quick rendition of Hi-Di-Hi soon settles everyone down. Most people are keen to sign up.”

Susan makes sure she keeps it in the family and wasted no time explaining the benefits to her daughters when they started work straight from school. “They’re both at Morrison’s and had no hesitation in joining,” said Susan. “Alison works on the deli counter at the Swansea store and Clare in the cash office at my old store in Neath.

“We’re working on the idea of visiting local schools and colleges to help give school leavers an insight into the benefits of joining a trade union when they start work. It’s important we target the youth because they are the future.

“Away from work I love to spend time with my husband Leyton and our 12 month old pet Pug, Poppy. I also manage to squeeze in the odd soap on TV now and then.”
