Flexible friend

23 February 2008

Usdaw’s campaigns are helping make a real difference for members in Lynne Griffin’s branch.

The team of reps who work for MidCounties Co-operative in Kidderminster are promoting family-friendly issues and helping members sort out their hours to suit their needs.

“Many members aren’t aware of what their rights actually are or the campaign work the union gets involved in to help improve members working lives,” said Lynne, 45, who has been a rep for nine years.

“The Parents and Carers campaign for example has already helped secure a whole host of new family-friendly benefits for workers.

“When my own son was born I spoke to my boss about rearranging my shifts and we sat down and agreed my new hours. Since then I’ve negotiated many flexible-working arrangements for my colleagues, most of whom are working mums who work 12 to 16 hours a week.

“Staff are surprised when they realise the union can help with all kinds of issues. The campaign days reflect the wider areas the union gets involved in, so they raise the union’s profile and help with recruitment.

“We all look forward to campaign days – including the customers – there’s always a buzz around the store.

“Membership stands at around 65 per cent but with membership week and the campaign spotlight days to come over the next few months, I’m sure we can improve on this over the coming months.”
