It’s all at the co-op23 February 2008It’s a little known fact but Usdaw’s reach in the co-operative sector goes beyond its retail division Network caught up with senior funeral director and rep Charles McGuigan Making an impression in your workplace is difficult enough, but when you have 27 sites with only a few potential members in each one the task multiplies. That was the job faced by senior funeral director and Usdaw rep Charles McGuigan who is the face of the union from the Co-operative Funeralcare in Glasgow. “I’ve spent time out visiting staff in 27 funeral parlours in and around the area and staff have been genuinely pleased to see me,” he said. “There’s very often just one or two staff at each site. Usually they haven’t seen an official or activist from the union so people are always very interested in what I have to say. It’s all about communications. “Usdaw’s leaflets and publications are a great starting point and show the full range of benefits for members. “I usually leave a good supply of leaflets for staff to have a look at and tell them that I’ll be back, happy to answer any questions and sign them up of course. “On my first trip out I picked up six members straight away. Others like a bit of time to think about it and that’s why follow up visits are crucial. “Because of the geographical spread of members in Funeralcare and the fact that many of them work alone - it’s important they know that as their rep I’m available and here for them whenever they have a problem."
