Signing up all workers

22 February 2008

Usdaw is making inroads among migrant workers with many willing to get more involved. Agneska Jadrzejczak is a typical example and has made light of her move from Krakow, Poland.

In less than two years migrant worker Agneska Jadrzejczak has made impressive progress. She moved from her home town of Krakow to the South East coast and has not looked back.

“Getting involved with the union has helped me settle into my job and my new surroundings very quickly,” said the 25 year-old Tesco sales assistant.

“I’ve been a union rep and a health and safety rep for eighteen months. Every day I learn more about the union, health and safety, and how I can help my colleagues with any problems at work,” said Agneska, who works at the Tesco store in Bournemouth, Dorset.

“I’ve had great support from my workmate and friend Linda Holder who is also a union rep. I didn’t know anyone when I first arrived here. But Linda’s help was vital. “She also encouraged me to join the union and get more involved. So when a vacancy came up for a rep I applied and was elected.

“My English is improving all the time and so is my confidence – I feel very good.

“I’ve had some good training sessions. I’ve attended a shop steward and health and safety course, which were great. Some of it I don’t always understand but there is always someone available – another rep or the tutor – to ask for help.

“Tesco is very well known in Poland – I had my interview and test in Krakow and was delighted I’d been successful. There are many Polish workers in the UK and it’s important for them to join the union so that they understand their rights at work.”

Reps are reminded that Usdaw has a recruitment leaflet available in a choice of 35 languages. Contact your local office for more details.
