Stand Down Star - Susan David

Realising the massive potential for recruitment in Morrisons was activist Susan David’s mission when she took time out to work as a stand-down rep in the South Wales and Western division.

The Swansea based rep visited stores in her area and signed up more than 100 members in a two week period. Her hard work paid off when Susan won the national individual recruitment award at the Organising Awards in January.

“I’ve been a rep for four years and I’ve always enjoyed the recruitment side of the job, so making the step up to doing a stint as a stand-down rep was perfect for me,” said the determined 49 year-old.

“It was the ideal opportunity to put my skills to the test. I was working in unfamiliar stores but I was delighted with the results. It couldn’t have gone any better really.

“I visited three stores over a two week period and recruited 112 new members. I also identified members who were interested in becoming reps, so the prospects look very good.

“Both management and staff gave me a warm welcome in each store. Most people were genuinely pleased to see me and used the opportunity to ask questions about the union and what it could do for them.

“I also took time-out to help area organisers Peter Fry and Nigel Barber with inductions at the brand new Morrison’s store in Llanelli and membership there now stands at 75 per cent.

“Being a stand-down rep is a great experience. It gave me the opportunity to build on my skills and confidence and I’m looking forward to going out and doing it again.”
