Jackie Martin's experience

18 December 2007

Tesco checkout team leader Jackie Martin is all fired up and raring to go after six months with Usdaw’s academy.

The 47 year-old from Edinburgh is more determined than ever to get involved in helping to swell the union’s membership north of the border.

“It’s been an amazing experience,” said Jackie who works at the Tesco superstore in Colinton, Edinburgh. “I’ve visited workplaces from Galashiels up to Falkirk. You learn so much working on the academy. My skills and versatility have been tested to the full and that’s made me more confident and able to deal with a variety of scenarios.

“You have to learn to take the ups and the downs. It can be very deflating when you spend your time planning your approach and organising your visit only to come away with nothing.

“But then there’s the other side when it goes extremely well. Like my visit to Ikea in Edinburgh where I pushed the union’s free Legal Plus service and I recruited two new reps and eight new members in no time at all.

“I’ve also had a lot of success with Argos. Most of the staff are young students working part-time or on short-term contracts but I’ve made some real progress signing up new members.

“Planning a store visit around a campaign helps and Freedom From Fear went down very well in the Tesco store in Falkirk where local MSP Cathy Peattie gave her support.

“The time has just flown by and there’s lots of positives to build on.”
