Home Get Active Successful Organising
Sharon Newson's experience18 December 2007Working with the academy has been a fantastic experience, for 42 year-old part-time Tesco team leader Sharon Newson. “It’s been a very satisfying and rewarding six months and just the challenge I was looking for. I’ve learned so much,” said Sharon, who has been out and about recruiting and organising in a variety of retail stores in Norfolk. Network caught up with Sharon at the Sainsbury’s store in North Walsham. “No two days are the same with every workplace different in terms of union organisation. You need to do your homework and plan your visits carefully so that you get the most out of them,” said Sharon. “This visit went really well and I signed up new members and, very importantly, a brand new rep.” Sharon has been a rep for two years at the Tesco store in Watton, Norfolk. “I originally volunteered as an activist,” said Sharon, “But I liked the recruitment side so I started helping out at inductions. I had a lot of success and my area organiser Stuart Sharman asked me to do some stand-down in other Tesco stores in the area. I also visited local Morrisons stores on my day off signing up new members.” Sharon completed a pre-academy training course in her division before applying for this year’s organising academy. “I was delighted when I found out I’d been successful. It was like a calling, it was meant to be. And I’ve not been disappointed. I’ve learned so much. It’s a unique experience for any committed rep.” Contact Details Media and Communications Department Ph: 0161 224 2804 Fax: 0161 249 2490 communications@usdaw.org.uk |
