Home Get Active Successful Organising
Academy reps help boost membership18 December 2007Usdaw was the first union to set up its own Organising Academy in 2003 with 15 organisers. Since then 94 organising officers have passed through its doors, including 24 this term. A staggering 34,000 new members have been recruited to-date with more than 2,600 new reps and activists identified. “The Academy is a unique opportunity for our proven reps to put their skills to the test and meet the challenges of working in unorganised workplaces,” said deputy general secretary Paddy Lillis. “Again this year the Academy has worked with a fine crop of activists who have done a terrific job visiting a variety of workplaces and recruited just short of 9,000 new members. “They have raised the union’s profile in stores where Usdaw has had little or no presence. “And they’ve laid down some good foundations with more than 600 new reps and activists identified who will now be given the training and support to organise their own workplaces more efficiently.” Usdaw is now recruiting for next year’s Academy. Could you recruit staff in an unorganised workplace and help newly elected reps become self-sufficient? As an organising officer you will spend six months with the Academy, which runs from May to November. Usdaw arranges the time off with your employer and will pay your wages. The Academy is fully accredited which means you receive an externally recognised qualification. At the end of the six-month secondment, you will then return to your own workplace to continue with your recruitment and organising work – highly skilled and motivated.
