Professional reps in action - Michael Gibson18 December 2007Night shift worker Michael Gibson was not content just to organise his own store so he volunteered to visit others as part of a stint as a stand-down rep. The Tesco rep has been in place for two years at his store in Dinnington, Sheffield but wanted to put himself to the test in other workplaces in and around the North Eastern division. “I’ve been out recruiting in Tesco Express, Metro and Superstores,” said the 28 year-old. “It’s been very successful. People have been pleased to see me, particularly the night shift workers who told me they hadn’t had many visits from the union. “Not only did I recruit new members but also new reps and that was very satisfying. “Usdaw’s campaigns are a real winner when I’m recruiting. They’re very relevant to our members and people are surprised when you explain the union campaigns on these issues. The Freedom From Fear campaign especially hits home with retail workers. “I’ve had lots of support and encouragement from my area organiser Linda McFadden. She’s always on hand with advice whenever I need it. And the union’s education department offers a range of first-class courses for all reps. “Although I’ve come a long way in two years, I would like to progress further. I’ve completed Usdaw’s pre-academy course and can’t wait to put my name forward for next year’s selection for the 2008 intake.” Contact Details Media and Communications Department Ph: 0161 224 2804 Fax: 0161 249 2490 communications@usdaw.org.uk |
