Professional reps in action - Jon Evans

18 December 2007

With a proven track record of recruiting already stacked up, warehouse operative Jon Evans decided to put his skills to the test working as a stand-down rep in the retail sector.

“I’d definitely recommend spending time as a stand-down rep, it’s been a very enjoyable and rewarding experience,” said Jon, who works for Wincanton in Daventry.

“Having previously been active in the distribution sector I was obviously a little apprehensive about working in retail, but looking forward to the challenge. The issues and concerns are different.

“Stand-down gives you more time to focus on a particular workplace and more time to spend with staff and find out what the issues are.

“Firstly, I contacted store managers, introduced myself and arranged my visits.

“It’s been very successful. There have been a lot of breakthroughs and progress made. Particularly with Morrisons where visits to the Malvern, Bilston and Rubery stores went extremely well, with new members and new reps joining up.

“A union rep is like a social worker. Once people know you’re from the union they’ll sit down and tell you their problems. When you explain how the union can help they want to join.

“Once you have a rep or team of reps in place they can set about organising their own workplace, and the beauty of stand down is you usually have time to revisit sites and see how things are getting on.”
