Home Get Active Successful Organising
Getting organised in all sectors23 October 2007The more members we have, the better chance we have of securing improvements to terms and conditions. There is massive potential for increasing our Co-op membership and our activists are working hard to make this happen. We are continuing to make improvements to our agreements that give reps the tools they need for recruitment. We have recently signed a ground-breaking Partnership Agreement with Midcounties Co-op, which will give recruitment and representation facilities that are second to none. The agreement has given us the opportunity to appoint three senior representatives, who will be responsible for co-ordinating union activities within the Society. Another example is the facilities agreement we have negotiated with Co-operative Retail Logistics (CRL). National shop steward Brian Loughhead can testify how successful this has been. “Tremendous progress has been made to improve the union and the structure for the reps within CRL,” he said. “And it can only get better for the union and its members. Through the agreement, we have created a strong support network for the reps and members – our next project will be to establish an internet based bulletin board where you will be able to post questions, suggestions, answers, etc on issues that members wish to discuss. This will allow us to take up members’ issues as quickly as possible and at the right level.” Recruitment in the Co-op Group and United Co-operatives really gathered pace during Membership Week in July. Every employee of both societies was sent a special membership pack inviting them to join the Union. Our reps worked very hard during Membership Week to bring attention to the packs and sign up new members. These packs will now be included in inductions for all new starters. Do you know what recruitment facilities are agreed at your workplace? For details, or for any support you need with recruiting, contact your local area organiser.
