Home Get Active Successful Organising
In store reps make all the difference24 October 2007In store reps are crucial to the success of the union and this has been proved at the Sainsbury’s store in Warpole in Worcestershire. “Historically, membership was virtually non existent and the store had never had an Usdaw rep,” said area organiser Darren Matthews. “Every attempt to raise the union’s profile over the years had very little impact. “The real breakthrough came when Jan Sanders decided to take on the rep’s role. She’s been a real inspiration.” “I’m enjoying my role,” said Jan. “Although I’ve worked for Sainsbury’s for 16 years I knew very little about Usdaw nor did my colleagues. “Darren was always happy to discuss our issues and concerns. Eventually a handful of staff joined and I volunteered to become a rep. “It wasn’t long before I was joined by young rep David George, age 16, whose father is an Usdaw rep and is very keen to get more involved. “It’s a great store to work in. We have a good relationship with our personnel manager and word is starting to get around that the union is a force for good. We now have around 50 members and this will improve as David and I become more confident, competent reps through our training with Usdaw.” Contact Details Media and Communications Department Ph: 0161 224 2804 Fax: 0161 249 2490 communications@usdaw.org.uk |
