Kelvin proves he's good value

21 October 2007

Recruiting new members and reps is easy when you believe in the product you’re selling, says Poundland rep Kelvin Blake from Birmingham.

“I’d never thought about joining the union until we had a visit from our local official and she presented herself and the union so well that I just had to join,” said Kelvin, 43. “It has to be one of the best decisions I’ve made. I was elected as a rep three years ago and now have 80 per cent membership in my store.

“We’ve made some real progress within Poundland since we signed the agreement three years ago. The company are fully on board and very proactive towards the union, which really helps.

“I’ve been welcomed in every store I’ve visited. People are happy to join; they’re just waiting to be asked. My aim is to have a rep in every store and we’re getting very close to that now and members know I’m available 24/7 for help and support.

“The company allowed me to take the time off to increase my union involvement. So I volunteered to do four weeks as a stand down rep visiting Poundland, Tesco and Somerfield stores.

“It was a brilliant experience. I can’t wait to do it again. I recruited 50 new members including two managers and four new reps, now that’s a great feeling. I picked up ten new members in a Somerfield store that had a long history of being anti-union.

“I’m going to apply for next year’s Organising Academy because I love being involved with the union, especially on recruitment, it’s a job well worth doing.”
